Basic rules for data security

Level

A rule of thumb is that 80 % of information security issues are caused by 20 % of risks. In most cases, the prevention is managed on an institutional level. For example, the institution may have different policies for data system security evaluation and data policy.

The most common data security risks educators and learners encounter are:

  • Phishing
  • Weak or re-used passwords
  • Malicious web pages
  • Physical data security
  • General awareness of GDPR and data protection regulations

An educator should recognize and use institutional platforms which are typically more secure than open / social media platforms. If using other external platforms, the educator should clearly indicate this to learners and be aware of potential data security issues.
