The CO2 emissions resulting from the production, use and data transfer of digital devices and infrastructure is called the digital carbon footprint.

Educators can discuss with and guide their students to adopt ‘green or sustainable thinking’ and, for example, favor renewable energy sources for their electricity and to take a look at their email posting manners (e.g. to avoid reply all) and come up with their own solutions for responsible digital learning.

Michele Marius (2011) has listed five ways to reduce the computing carbon footprint:

1. Turn off computers when not in use
2. Manage the PC power plan
3. Limit the use of screen savers
4. Monitor the power consumption
5. Use greener equipment/devices.
