A welcoming learning atmosphere requires transparency and clarity about the course policies.
How much flexibility is possible, depends on the mode of the online implementation (e.g. small group virtual course vs. a mooc).
If a reasonable group size, students can be divided in break out rooms to discuss and share their expectations regarding to inclusive practices and even create a study unit policy for inclusion.
A student-driven inclusion policy enables to take into account more effectively diversities represented on a given study unit. A policy drafted by students can be created on any collaborative platform such as Google Docs or Miro whiteboard.
